Cognitive debt — and what to do about it
“I’m outsourcing my thinking and getting dumber”
Cognitive debt is what accumulates when you hand thinking to an AI and skip the understanding: the work gets done, but the comprehension that would have formed in you doesn’t. Like technical debt, it’s cheap in the moment and compounds — each answer you accept without engagement makes the next one harder to judge. The research behind it studies cognitive offloading: delegating mental work to a tool instead of doing it, then losing the capacity you stopped exercising.
This page is the reference we wish existed when the studies started circulating: what the research actually shows, what it doesn’t, and the named techniques that counter the mechanism — for you, and for the AI you work with.

What does the research actually show?
Three studies anchor the discussion. Each is linked to its primary source, with its finding and its limits — both matter.
MIT Media Lab — “Your Brain on ChatGPT” (Kosmyna et al., 2025). 54 participants wrote essays over four months in three groups: ChatGPT-assisted, search-engine-assisted, and unassisted, under EEG. The ChatGPT group showed the weakest brain connectivity during writing, reported the lowest ownership of their essays, and most could not accurately quote their own text minutes after writing it. The authors coined cognitive debt for the pattern. Limits: a preprint with peer review in progress, a small sample, and one narrow task — essay writing — so generalizing beyond it is extrapolation.
Microsoft Research + Carnegie Mellon — “The Impact of Generative AI on Critical Thinking” (Lee et al., CHI 2025). 319 knowledge workers, 936 real examples of GenAI use at work. The pattern: the more confident people were in the AI, the less critical thinking they reported doing; effort shifts from doing the work to verifying the AI’s work — and often the verification doesn’t happen. Limits: self-reported behavior, which measures what people notice about their own thinking, not the thinking itself.
SBS Swiss Business School — “AI Tools in Society” (Gerlich, Societies, 2025). 666 participants across age groups. Heavier AI use correlated with lower critical-thinking scores, with cognitive offloading as the mediating factor; the correlation was strongest in the youngest cohort. Limits: correlational — it cannot say whether AI use lowers critical thinking or people who think less critically lean on AI more.
Taken together: none of the three is a verdict, all three point the same way, and the mechanism they converge on — offload the thinking, lose the grip — is the one worth acting on.
What do I actually do about it?
The advice that survives contact with the research keeps converging on the same moves: form your own view first, restate the problem in your own words, verify claims instead of absorbing them, and keep judgment at the moment of completion. Those moves have names here, with worked prompts you learn to build rather than paste:
- Self-Ask Before Delegating — you pasted the problem before reading it, and now you can’t judge the answer that came back. Form the view first; delegate second.
- Rephrase Before Responding — the answer fits your words but misses your point. Restating the problem keeps the comprehension yours.
- Ground It or Label It — fluent claims absorbed unverified are exactly the offloading the studies measure. Claims arrive grounded, or labeled as unverified.
- Declared Success Without Proof — “done” without a receipt ends your attention early. Completion claims come with the check that ran.

Can my AI help instead of making it worse?
The studies measure what happens when the AI replaces your thinking. The counter-position is a working practice: both of you applying the same named techniques, out loud.
